It was the first summer I had after I moved to California. I was seventeen years old at that time. I was a very young and vulnerable teenager. Falling in love was easy but I dropped out of many relationships because I noticed that all boys are the same. I thought that nothing will change my mind about them until I found Luke.

It all happened when I was trying to get familiar with the place. I found a river near my new house and it was the perfect spot for me. It was peaceful and I could watch the sunrise there every morning. I could also hear the music created by the flowing of water into the lake and the joyful chirps of the birds up in the trees. The cool breeze of the air touches my face every time I sit at the top of a big stone writing poems and composing songs. The very special moment in my life happened one morning.

“Hi, may I know your name?” He said.
I wasn’t able to say anything because I was shocked. I thought that I was alone.
“I said hi, may I know your name?” He smilingly repeated.
My senses came back to me when I heard him repeated his words.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I was shocked because I didn’t know that someone aside from me is here too. By the way, I’m Anne.” I finally replied.
“That’s fine with me. By the way, I’m Luke. I live at the nearside of the river. Are you a new resident in this place? Your face is not familiar.”
“Yes, we just moved here last week. I’m originally from Italy.”
“Why are you here if you’re an Italian?”
“My mother is an Italian but my father is an American. That’s why I’m here to spend my summer. After this summer, I will return to Italy to study. I want to become a medical technologist someday. How about you? ”
“Me? I’m a graduating student next year. I will be a pilot. How old are you?”
“I’m seventeen years old. How about you?”
“I’m twenty years old.”

Our conversation went on and on and I realized that we enjoyed each other’s company very much. Luke was my first friend in California. I found it interesting to be with him everyday. The days passed by easily when we’re together. Honestly, I was nursing a broken heart when we moved here. However, the pain in my heart caused by my past love was removed in his company. We learned about our similarities and differences. I found out that we are music lovers. In fact, he was a bassist and vocalist of a band. We enjoyed having a good laugh while sharing stories. I called him whenever I had any problems. He gave me strength each time I fall as well as happiness and inspirations in life. In short, life was easy when I’m with him. It was as if my problems vanished when he looks at me. He has beautiful eyes, winsome smile and is blessed with a handsome face. I had past relationships but my feelings for him were different. I couldn’t look straight in the face at him whenever we talked. I couldn’t talk whenever he looks at me. My heart melts when I’m with him. I fell for him hard and fast. I was crazily, madly and deeply in love with him. It seemed that my world stops when he’s not around. I dreamt of him every night. I was totally in love but I did not know if he felt the same way too.

One day, he calls and tells me to meet him at the river.

I ran to the riverbank and found him standing back facing me as he waited for me. I was excited because I thought that he will finally tell me about his feelings for me.
